Xbox 360 Wireless mic won't connect?

I recently purchased a wireless mic, which was brand new. Not second hand, or anything. It was "fresh from the package". I have gone step-by-step to connect it to the console, however, it won't connect. When I press the sync button on both the console then the mic, the lights flash as they should, and the mic connects for anywhere between 3-15 seconds, then will begin to flash as though it is trying to sync again, and I didn't press any buttons on anything. I have tried it with no controllers active, and with controllers on. I don't get what is happening.
