How can you test your alternator to see that it does not go bad on you?

How can you test your alternator to see that it does not go bad on you? Is there a way to test it without going into autoparts store? Id like to do this as part of my routine checks atleast annually to keep from ruining my battery when I finally realize my alternater is bad.
